David & Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Animal Orphanage is an elephants and rhinos nurturing centre located in the surbubs of Nairobi City.
A visit to the Orhanage will see you learn about the trust’s two major programs – Orphan’s Project and Fostering Program.
Considered as a globally recognized projectwith an aim to rescues and rehabilitates elephants and rhinos that have been orphaned due to poaching and habitat loss, the result has seen hundreds of infant elephants hand-raised and reintroduced to the wild at Tsavo East.
In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife society of Kenya, the Fostering Program, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick not only he is credited with developing a complex milk formular, but also lead person in an in-depth understanding of husbandry that supports an elephant nursery.
Activities:
- Anti-poaching efforts by operating and funding many successful de-snaring teams
- Aerial support in partnership with wildlife authorities within the protected areas
- Descalating the activities of illegal meat hunters.
- Setting up of mobile veterinary units that work in Tsavo West and East Parks.
- Spearheading of local educational programs to raise awareness,
- Sharing information on both local and international fronts
- Publishing articles for the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya.
The visit to the facility is offered in the morning for visitors while orphanage sponsors have access on an afternoon visit.
