4:45 a.m. Meet up at International House Parking, City Hall Way. Boarding opens.

5:00 a.m. Departure for Njabini Forest Station.

07:30 a.m. Upon arrival at Njabini Forest Station, you will find Elephant Hill, which is about 100km away from Nairobi CBD. The hill is famously known as “the ultimate hiking destination” and is an ideal challenge for novice hikers who want to test their limits and get used to higher altitudes.

The 9km hike trail of Elephant Hill commences at the Njabini Forest Station gate, located at an elevation of 8,202ft (2,500m) above sea level, and ends at the summit, situated at an elevation of 12,000ft (3,658m) above sea level.

The entire hike up and down takes 7-10 hours, hiking at a moderate pace.

08:00 a.m. The hike begins on a moderately paved path that cuts through a planted forest and is about 3km long. Along the way, you may see some flocks of sheep and a few cattle, which are signs of human activity.

The official starting point is reached at the end of this path, with an elevation of 9,192ft (2,802m) above sea level. After this, you'll need to trek another 1.5km on the Elephant Hill Hike to get to the Bamboo Gate, which is located at an elevation of 9,622ft (2,933m) above sea level. Once you reach the Bamboo Gate, you'll enter the bamboo zone and start hiking on a narrow and muddy trail.

The tall bamboo trees create a dense canopy, making the trail wet, slippery, and dimly lit. It's important to be well-equipped for falls, so it's advisable to wear comfortable, waterproof, and sturdy hiking boots. The occasional pile of elephant dung and fresh footprints serve as a constant reminder that you are walking through a wildlife area.

There is no need to worry about wild animals as they naturally avoid the trail. Additionally, you will always be accompanied by an armed guard for your safety. At an elevation of 10,679ft (3,255m) above sea level, the bamboo zone abruptly gives way to the lush moorland. It is known as an uncanny place because most hikers give up at this point.

The trail becomes harder as you move from the moorland to the rocky zone. The rocky zone has scattered shrubs and giant lobelia. Be careful while walking here because even a small fall can cause serious injury. When you reach The Tail (11,526ft/3,513m above sea level), you'll see the Elephant Hill summit towering ahead of you.

The trail to the summit is very steep, but very rewarding once you conquer it. If the weather is good, you might be able to see the ruins at a recent airplane crash site. From the summit, you'll get an unforgettable 360° view of the scenic surroundings, including the inviting Kinangop Peak.

The Elephant Hill hike offers stunning views of the Aberdare mountain range, including the second-highest peak, Sasumua Dam, and the famous Ndakaini Dam. However, the hike up to the summit is challenging and the descent can be just as tough on your knees. A turn-back at 2:30 p.m. is mandatory to avoid encounters with wild animals after dusk, and departure for Nairobi is at 6:00 p.m.

To prepare for the hike, it's important to have reasonable fitness as reaching the summit requires some physical effort. However, if you don't make it all the way to the Tail, don't worry - even reaching the Point of Despair is a significant milestone. Remember, it's not about conquering the mountain, it's about conquering yourself!

If you plan to hike in the Aberdare mountain range, it's important to be prepared for the unpredictable weather. Dressing warmly and carrying a raincoat or poncho is a must, as is wearing waterproof gaiters to keep mud and debris off your hiking boots.

A thermal base layer is also a good idea to keep warm without being weighed down by bulky outerwear.
Footwear is another important consideration. The Elephant Hill trail is known for being muddy and slippery, so it's absolutely essential to wear proper waterproof hiking boots with a good grip. Trust us, you'll be grateful for them when they keep your feet warm and prevent countless slips and falls.

To keep your energy levels up during your hike, be sure to pack plenty of snacks such as nuts, fruits, a lunch bar, or a sandwich. You'll also need to stay hydrated, especially at high altitudes. Bring along two to three liters of water in a hydration pack for easy carrying and sipping.

Remember to drink small sips of water throughout your hike, especially if you start feeling dizzy or have a mild headache. You may also want to bring along some painkillers just in case.

    PREPARATIONS TIPS
Preparation for the hike Engage in active cardio exercises such as aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming among others the week prior to the event. Set aside the day before the hike for resting -- take a break from exercises.

Increase your hydration by at least two days to the hike. Purpose to get enough rest the night before the hike. Increase your carbohydrate intake two days before the hike. This helps boost your energy reserves.

If on intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a break in the period one day before and after the hike. Cut your toe nails, please, cut your toe nails! Have a generous breakfast before stepping out of the house -- or at least 3 hours before the start of the event.

This ensures that most of the food has been digested by the time you begin the hike, giving you the much-needed energy while ensuring your stomach is not too full for comfort.

Use the bathroom before leaving the house. This avoids unnecessary bathroom breaks on the commute and during the hike. Set your mind up for conquering yourself. Hiking is 90% mindset, 10% physical preparation. Once you win the battle in your mind, everything else contributes less than 10%. You can do it!

    DESTINATION INFORMATION

    Arrive On Time.

You should plan to check in at least three hours before the scheduled departure time for international flights and two hours prior to the scheduled departure time for domestic flights due to additional security checks.

Please finish all immigration procedures upon arrival and retrieve your bags. Check your voucher for detailed instructions if your program involves airport arrival shuttles, as they differ depending on the destination.

    Transfer.
We kindly suggest that you give our representative 30 minutes extra time from the time of your booked transfer due to local traffic and other unavoidable situations.
Transfers to and from the airport are included. You shouldn't worry about being late for your tour because such potential delays are considered when booking transfers.

    During Game Safaris.

Ensure to pack your items in a soft-sided duffel bag and pack lightly due to the constrained space in safari vehicles. Using conventional luggage with rigid frames or hard plastic panels is not recommended.

Please be aware that there is an environmental prohibition on single-use plastic bags.

    ABOUT ACCOMMODATION & MONEY

    About Your Accommodations.
Each hotel is chosen carefully, considering its overall quality, location, cost, food, service, and cleanliness. Standard twin-bedded (two single beds) rooms with private bathrooms are available in every room. Many accommodations are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. Some of our tours require walking or stairs between tents. During this tour, you may come close to wild animals whose actions can be unpredictable.

Unless otherwise specified, choosing a room is always completely up to the hotel's management on a run-of-house basis.

    Electricity in Safari Camps.
Some camps and lodges rely on generators to supply electricity, which may not always be available. Travelers using power-dependent devices must inform the travel manager in advance so that arrangements can be made to keep them plugged in through the night.

    Electricity Specification
Please note: The U.S. uses 120 volts, and you can purchase a converter and transformer at most hardware stores for your 120V appliances.

Tanzania - The voltage used is 230 volts, 3-pin square (UK standard).

Hotel check-in times are typically after 4:00 p.m., and check-out times are before midday. Hotels will typically let you store your stuff in their luggage room if you plan on arriving early or leaving late. If the hotel can check you in earlier or let you stay later, inquire at the front desk.

    Currency.
Before you leave your country, we advise that you get a small quantity of currency for the first country you'll be visiting. A smart strategy is to avoid carrying too much cash.
ATMs accept most ATM cards in many countries but only dispense in the local currency.

    Credit Cards
Even while credit cards are generally accepted, having local cash on hand is still a good idea. Let your credit card issuer know you will be traveling to prevent your card from being stopped for security concerns.
