    Paradise On Foot.

    • Imagined a hike to the famous rugged, hump backed Kilimambogo mountain, the ancient rock jutting high above the Athi plains and hazily visible from Nairobi!
    • D. Powell-Cotton was the first to climb it 1902 and not long later, sir William Northrup MacMillan an American Millionaire acquired the mountain. 
    • Sir William Northrup entertained in succession eminent visitors among them Winston Churchill and Ex- President Theodore Roosevelt.
    • On your road to the summit, visit MacMillan grave and those of his wife and their servant Louise Decker.
    • Before his death he bequeathed the the mountain a reason why he was buried here.
    • Mingle with the local people from whom you will get to know why Swahili and Bantu people call it " the mountain of Buffalos" while Masai people call it "the big mountain"
    • At the summit, you will be standing at a strategic point to marvel at the magnificent Panorama views of the Athi river,

    the pineapple fields of Thika ( Delmonte Farm) and the snow capped Mt. Kenya as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro.

    Make a short stop to view the fall, it is worthwhile.

    • See broad cascade of white water plunging 30 meters over a precipice with many lips giving rise to the name, "Fourteen Falls".
    • Enjoy the cool air which will give you the much needed relief from the hustle and bustle of busy life of town.

    How to book the Mt. Kilimambogo Hike

    Pay at least 1,800/= to Mpesa buy goods till 353994 and clear the balance before boarding.

    • Maximum number of tickets: 50
    • Reservation will be made on a first-pay-first-reserved basis.
    • Your ticket gives you 5% off purchases from website payment.
    • Group booking (4 or more tickets) gives you 5% off the ticket cost.
    • Early bird booking gives you 5% off the ticket cost if you pay in full more than 7 days before the event date.

     

    Cancellation and Refund Policy.

    • Where cancellation is requested more than 48 hours before the event date, a 50% refund of the booking confirmation deposit will be issued.
    • The excess paid above the booking confirmation deposit will be refunded in full.

    6:15 a.m. Meet up at International House Parking, City Hall Way.

    Boarding opens. 6:30 a.m.

    Departure for Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park.

    08:15 a.m. Arrival at Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park.

     

    The Park History:

    • Ol Donyo Sabuk was once home to Lord William Northrop Macmillan whose house still stands at the foot of the mountain.
    • Lord William Northrop Macmillan was an American soldier who was knighted by the King of England.
    • He and his wife arrived in Kenya in 1901 to carry out hunting expeditions.
    • They were philanthropists who established the Macmillan Library in central Nairobi.
    • Lord Northrop together with his wife, house help, and their family dog were buried at a site seven kilometres along the terrain that leads to the summit of the mountain.

     

    About Mt. Kilimambogo & Expectations.

    • Mt. Kilimambogo rises to 2,145m above sea level on a gentle 6km trail.
    • The round hike to the summit and back to the gate covers approximately 12km and is typically completed within 4-6 hours of hiking at a moderate pace.
    • If you like a slightly bigger challenge, you can skip the footpath and take your entire hike on the dirt road winding up the mountain.

    This adds 3km to your hike each way.

    • Expect breathtaking views of the surroundings along the way, as you trek through the virgin forest.
    • Mt. Kilimambogo is a beginner-friendly mountain for all new hikers. And for the veterans, it is a friendly reminder of why you love hiking.
    • Mountaineering not only presents a good cardio workout but it is a good way to spend time with friends and family.

    There is something so pure about hiking.

    • Maybe it is the constant encouragement from others that you are almost at the peak or the clean air that tickles away the motor fumes from the busy town life.
    • One sure result you must expect is the sense of well-being that after a hike!
    • Along the hiking terrain, you may spot several species of birds ranging from the African pied wagtail to the African hawk-eagle.
    • You may also see bushbucks, olive baboons, mongooses, and aardvarks.
    • If you are lucky enough you may spot buffaloes that have reduced in number as the years go by.
    • There are several observing points on your way to the summit at which you can enjoy the panoramic view of the Ol Donyo Sabuk area.
    • The summit is located 9 kilometres from the main gate. It serves both as a picnic site and a camping site.
    • The summit offers a panoramic view of Mount Kenya and if you have your binoculars a good view of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

    Notes:

    • Please be punctual; latecomers will be left behind and forfeit the entire amount paid up.
    • Thika Road pickups should make arrangements with the team lead by 8 p.m. on the eve of the event.
    • Pickup stops will be no longer than 5 minutes.
    • There will be no shopping stops in the morning.
    • Please stock your supplies by the eve of the event.
    • Please adhere to the set turn-back time.
    • Punctual departure for Nairobi means everyone gets back to Nairobi on time.

    How to prepare for the hike

    • Engage in active cardio exercises such as aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming among others the week prior to the event.
    • Set aside the day before the hike for resting -- take a break from exercises.
    • Increase your hydration by at least two days to the hike.
    • Purpose to get enough rest the night before the hike.
    • Increase your carbohydrate intake two days before the hike. This helps boost your energy reserves.
    • If on intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a break in the period one day before and after the hike.
    • Cut your toe nails, please, cut your toe nails!
    • Have a generous breakfast before stepping out of the house -- or at least 3 hours before the start of the event.
    • This ensures that most of the food has been digested by the time you begin the hike, giving you the much-needed energy while ensuring your stomach is not too full for comfort.
    • Use the bathroom before leaving the house.This avoids unnecessary bathroom breaks on the commute and during the hike.

    Set your mind up for conquering yourself.

    Hiking is 90% mindset, 10% physical preparation.

    Once you win the battle in your mind, everything else contributes less than 10%.
