Ngare Ndare Forest 1 Day Trip

  • NGARE NDARE FOREST 1 DAY TRIP

Fairland is a wondrous place where you can escape into an ideal landscape for both adventure and relaxation. From exhilarating activities like swimming, diving, and ziplining to serene hikes and bike rides, Fairland offers something for everyone. Our hiking trip promises to deliver an unforgettable safari experience.

Witness the breathtaking beauty of the Icy River as it cascades down in all its glory, and marvel at the magnificent Ngare Ndare Falls, which spans a majestic 30 feet and boasts a refreshing pool. Take on the 450-meter Canopy Walk, which rises 10 meters above the ground, atop ancient Cedar trees, and balance on the slightly shaky yet sturdy walkway while gripping the wire bars on both sides. At Fairland, you'll find inspiration at every turn.

    0600hrs:

Arrive outside Supreme Court, CBD, Nairobi.
    0630hrs:

    Depart Nairobi for Nanyuki.

The journey from Nairobi to Nanyuki Town takes about 4 hours by car. Located southeast of Mount Kenya and to the west of the Great Rift Valley, Nanyuki is renowned for its vast ranches, farms, and wildlife conservations, making it a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts.
    0930hrs:
20 minutes stop at the Equator Landmark in Nanyuki Town.

As we travel, we will make a 20-minute stopover at the Equator in Nanyuki town. This stopover presents a unique chance to stretch your body and conduct an experiment on the Coriolis Effect.

Though it may appear insignificant, the yellow concrete signboard marking the Equator point actually signifies that you are at the center of the Earth, between the North Pole and the South Pole.

The Coriolis Effect is a fascinating phenomenon that impacts the behavior of water at the Equator. Depending on the hemisphere you find yourself in, the water will move in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.

For instance, if you stand to the south of the Equator line in the Southern Hemisphere, the water will move anti-clockwise. On the other hand, if you stand to the north of the Equator line, the water will move clockwise.

When you are standing on the Equator line itself, the water will show no movement. The locals are eager to help you set up this experiment, and it's an excellent opportunity to learn about the Coriolis Effect and marvel at the wonders of our planet.
    1130hrs:
Explore Ngare Ndare Forest with an armed ranger, hike 7km to the famous waterfalls, and refresh with a numbing cold swim in the pool.

Wait a few minutes for your body to adapt to the cold water as it comes from a mountain spring near Mount Kenya. Enjoy the scenery and wildlife along the way.
    1330hrs:

    Canopy Walk.

After completing the hike, you can experience the Canopy Walk, the longest and highest suspended walkway in East Africa. The 10-meter-high and 450-meter-long walkway will take you through a suspended trail within the Forest, passing through the canopies of the tall Cedar trees.

You can observe elephants feeding and moving beneath the walkway while you balance on the slightly shaky but well-built steel cable walkway, holding steel handrails on both sides.
    1430hrs:

Picnic lunch at the end of the Canopy Walk.

At the end of the Canopy Walk, savor your picnic lunch on a serene wooden deck.

Allow yourself to be enveloped by the breathtaking scenery and capture the moment with unforgettable photos before heading back to Nairobi.

    HEALTH CARE.
Have a generous breakfast before stepping out of the house -- or at least 3 hours before the start of the event. This ensures that most of the food has been digested by the time you begin the hike, giving you the much-needed energy while ensuring your stomach is not too full for comfort.

Use the bathroom before leaving the house. This avoids unnecessary bathroom breaks on the commute and during the hike.

Set your mind up for conquering yourself. Hiking is 90% mindset and 10% physical preparation. Once you win the battle in your mind, everything else contributes less than 10%. You can do it!

The purpose is to get enough rest the night before the hike.

Increase your carbohydrate intake two days before the hike. This helps boost your energy reserves. If on intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a break in the period one day before and after the hike.

Cut your toenails, please, cut your toenails!

Engage in active cardio exercises such as aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming, among others, the week prior to the event.

Set aside the day before the hike for resting -- take a break from exercises.

Increase your hydration by at least two days before the hike.

    FITNESS LEVEL:
The hike through Ngare Ndare Forest is a challenging one and requires a reasonable level of fitness to reach the summit. But don't let that discourage you, as you are not alone. No matter how far you make it, every milestone you reach on the trail is equally significant.

Remember, you're not conquering the mountain, you're conquering yourself!

    CLOTHING:
The weather can be highly unpredictable, changing from warm and sunny to foggy with hailstorms within seconds, without warning. To stay prepared, it is recommended to carry warm clothes and a raincoat or poncho as a backup.

You may also find waterproof gaiters helpful in keeping mud and debris off your hiking boots. Additionally, wearing a thermal base layer can help you stay warm without having to carry bulky outerwear.

    FOOTWEAR:
When you hike the Ngare Ndare Forest trail, it's important to wear proper waterproof hiking boots with a good grip. Not only will they keep your feet warm, but they will also prevent countless slips and falls along the way.

    SUPPLIES:
When traveling to high altitudes, pack snacks like nuts, fruits, and lunch bars to keep your energy up. Bring two to three liters of water, and sip it slowly from a hydration pack. Take small sips of water throughout to combat dizziness or headaches. Pack painkillers, just in case.

    THINGS TO NOTE:
If you plan to hike in the deep forest, it is crucial that you have an experienced guide with you. The forest guards are available at the forest station to accompany hikers. Wild animals such as elephants, rhinos, and monkeys roam freely in the forest.

It is imperative that you make no noise and stay off their tracks if you come across them.
Bringing your own snacks for the hike is allowed, but littering is strictly prohibited. This is a natural habitat and there is no one hired to clean up, and litter can be harmful to the animals.

Stick with your group at all times since there are no defined paths, and it's incredibly easy to get lost. Hiking alone is not advisable if you are unfamiliar with the area.
