    Things To Note:

    • Never venture into the deep forest without an experienced guide. The forest station always provides its guards to hike with people.
    • The forest has wild animals like elephants, rhinos, monkeys and many more. Avoid making noise while hiking and also keep off their track in case you sight them.
    • You are allowed to carry snacks of your choice as you hike but do not litter as this is a natural habitat with no hired people to clean up. The litter might be harmful to the animals that call this place home.
    • Do not wander away from your group as the thick forest has no defined path and it is easy to get lost.
    • It is not advisable to hike alone especially if you are not familiar with the area.

    What to carry:

    • Wear hiking clothes preferably long sleeves and covering your legs to avoid being scratched by the bushes. Hiking shoes that are waterproof and can do well in muddy terrains. Carry a raincoat as showers can be experienced unexpectedly. A sun hat is also advisable, especially in the sunny season.
    • Carry extra clothes to change in case of muddy terrain or when it rains.
    • Carry water and snack to take when taking breaks in between the walk, it does not need to be heavy. A fruit, some sugar glucose, biscuits and water will do.
    • Binoculars and a zoom camera are a must-have especially for bird watching and some insect photography.
    • If you are a foreigner, a passport or proof of identification might be required especially if you had not booked for the hike beforehand.

    Itinerary

0600hrs: Arrive outside Supreme Court, CBD, Nairobi.

    0630hrs: Depart Nairobi for Nanyuki.

Depart Nairobi to Nanyuki Town a journey of 4 hours’ drive. Nanyuki Town is situated South East of Mount Kenya and to the west of the Great Rift Valley.

It is also famous with the largest ranches, farms and wildlife conservations in Kenya.

0930hrs: 20 minutes stop at the Equator Landmark in Nanyuki Town.

We will have a 20 minutes stop over at the Equator in Nanyuki town to stretch the body or try out the “Coriolis Effect”. The yellow concrete signboard that marks the Equator point might seem not to be a big deal but it denotes that you are exactly at the centre of the world, between the North Pole and the South Pole.

The Equator point is the perfect place to undertake an experiment on the fascinating phenomenon known as the ‘’Coriolis Effect’’. The Effect has to do with how water behaves at the Equator, depending on which hemisphere you are standing on.

If you are standing to the south of the Equator line on the southern hemisphere, the water tends to move in an anti-clockwise manner. If you stand to the north of the Equator line, you will notice the water moving in a clockwise direction.

If on the other hand, you are standing at the Equator itself, the water shows no movement. The locals are always eager to set up this experiment for you.

1130hrs: Arrive at Ngare Ndare Forest, Hike to through the Forest to the Waterfall and Pool. Soon you arrive at Ngare Ndare Forest, you will be assigned an armed ranger. Thereafter you will have a short briefing about the Forest and later set out on the 7km hike to the famous waterfalls.

Note that you are allowed to jump in and enjoy a numbing cold swim that shocks the body but must wait for some few minutes to have your body adapt to the weather. The waterfall pool’s water is cold as its source is a mountain spring near Mount Kenya.

    1330hrs: Canopy Walk.

At this point you will head back the starting point to the Canopy Walk, a 10 meters high and 450 meters long suspended cable walk. Canopy Walk is the longest and highest suspended walkway in East Africa. The hanging wire and steel cable walkway will take you through a 450-meter suspended trail into part of the Forest, through the canopies of the tall Cedar trees.

It is for the adventurous as it involves balancing on the slightly shaky but well-built steel cable walkway while holding steel handrails on both sides. You might be lucky and encounter elephants feeding and moving beneath the Canopy Walk while you walk safely far above them.

1430hrs: Picnic lunch at the end of the Canopy Walk

Enjoy your picnic lunch at the end of the Canopy Walk on a wooden platform deck located at its end. Relax as you enjoy the scenery or take photos as you await for your departure back to Nairobi.

1500 hrs: Departure back to Nairobi

    Depart back to Nairobi

    1900hrs: Arrive at Nairobi

Arrive at Nairobi where you will be dropped off at the same point we picked you up in the morning.

    Fitness Level:

The Ngare Ndare Forest hike is no joke and arguably requires if not extremes yet reasonable fitness to get to the summit. This however you shouldn't let it discourage you, because you are not alone.

Whichever far you get to, consider that as an equally good milestones on the Ngare Ndare Forest trail. Remember, you never conquer the mountain, you conquer yourself!

    Clothing:

The weather is highly unpredictable, period and it normally changes from warm and sunny to foggy with hailstorms within seconds - no warning. It is therefore safe to carry warm clothes with you - not forgetting to pack change clothes such as a raincoat or poncho. Waterproof gaiters will also come handy to keep mud and debris off your hiking boots.

As a option, wearing a thermal base layer is a good way to keep warm without carrying bulky clothes for the outer shell.

    Footwear:

The Ngare Ndare Forest trail will also require you to wear a pair of proper waterproof hiking boots with a good grip. You will be thankful when they keep your feet warm and save you from countless slips and falls.

    Supplies:

Your body will need lots of energy. Be sure to carry enough snacks such as a lunch bar, nuts, fruits, or smoothie. You may also pack a sandwich. The high altitude may take a toll on you, so be sure to carry enough water. Two to three liters should be enough.

You can have your water in a hydration pack for ease of carrying and sipping. Make sure you take your water in small sips throughout, especially when you start feeling dizzy or having a mild headache. You may carry some painkillers just in case.
