9 Days Visit the Roots of the Scouts Movement and other parks in Kenya

    Here are some must-visit places to add to your itinerary.
     
    Take a scenic game drive at Nairobi National Park, visit David Sheldrick to watch baby elephants feed and play, explore Karen Blixen's house to learn about Kenya's colonial history, feed giraffes at the Giraffe Center, and watch women artisans make unique bead products at Kazuri Beads.
     
    On the second day of your safari, we'll take you on a tour to visit the starting point of the Scouting Movement. You'll have the chance to meet local Scouting fellows or Girl Guiding sisters.
     
    From Nairobi, you'll travel through rich farmland to reach the Outspan Hotel, which is part of the Scouting history. The founder of the Scout Movement lived and died in this area, and he is buried here. His gravestone bears a circle with a dot in the center, which is the trail sign for "I have gone home."
     
    Next, we'll tour the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where you'll cross the equator to reach the Sweetwaters Game Reserve. This is the only park in Kenya with a Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
     
    You'll also get to see the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, a population of southern white rhinos, and a refuge for the last two northern white rhinos left in the world.
     
    Lastly, you'll get to visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which houses orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees.

The park offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year, thanks to its grassy plains and regular rainfall which supports a vast population of herbivores, attracting many predators. The park is home to all three big cats, which can be easily spotted. Additionally, the annual wildebeest migration, which is one of the world's most incredible wildlife spectacles, passes through the park.
     
     

    Upon arrival in Nairobi, you will begin your Kenya safari adventure.
     
    You can transfer directly to your first destination, take the rest of the day to get acclimated to the new time zone, or go on an independent city tour.
     
    Your overnight stay can either be in Nairobi or outside of the city.

    DAY 1: NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK.
     
    6:30 a.m., your safari guide will pick you up from your hotel in Nairobi for the day tour.  
     
    The tour begins with a visit to the Nairobi National Park, followed by a trip to the David Shedrick baby elephant orphanage.
     
    You can see the adorable baby elephant orphans during feeding time (from 11 a.m. to 12 noon). 
     
    Afterward, depending on your preference, you can enjoy Lunch at the Karen Blixen coffee garden or the famous Carnivore restaurant. 
     
    In the afternoon, you will visit the Karen Blixen Museum to learn more about Kenya's colonial history.
     
    Then, you'll stop at the Giraffe Center, where you can get up close and personal with the Rothschild's Giraffes and feed them. 
     
    The tour will end at the Kazuri Bead Center, a self-help women's project. Here, you can watch women artisans creating unique bead products. 
     
    Finally, your safari guide will drop you off at your Nairobi hotel.

    DAY 2: NAIROBI - NYERI SCOUT FOUNDER SITE.
     
    Today, we will drive from Nairobi to the Outspan Hotel in Nyeri town, passing through Thika town.
     
    Nyeri is the town where the founder of the scout movement lived. The East Africa Scout movement was established in 1910 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1964. As of 2008, it had 261,786 members.
     
    In 1937, Robert Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, and his wife Olave visited Kenya on their way to South Africa. They spent time in Nyeri, near Mount Kenya, where his former personal secretary, Eric Sherbrooke Walker, ran a hotel.
     
    They returned in 1937, and at the end of 1938, he and Olave retired to Paxtu cottage, which was built especially for them in Nyeri.
     
    Lord and Lady Baden Powell lived there until his death on January 8th, 1941, and he was buried in Nyeri. His gravestone bears a circle with a dot in the center, the trail sign for "I have gone Home."
     
    Lady Baden Powell moved back to England after the death of her husband, but when she died, she was buried beside Lord Baden Powell.
     
    Baden Powell's Paxtu cottage, now a small museum, is located on the grounds of the Outspan Hotel, and for many years, it served as a WAGGOS world center. After Lunch, we will visit Lord Baden Powell's grave and meet scout boys and girls.

    DAY 3: NAIROBI - NYERI - OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY.
     
    Depart from Nyeri in the morning and drive to the Sweetwaters Game Reserve.
     
    Upon arrival at the Sweetwaters Tented Camp, enjoy a delicious lunch before embarking on a game drive in the Reserve.
     
    In the afternoon, continue exploring the private sanctuary and visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Kenya's only one of its kind.
     
    You will also have the opportunity to visit the Visitors Information Centre.
     
    Return to Sweetwaters Tented Camp for dinner and overnight stay. An optional night game drive is also available.

    DAY 4: OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY - SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE.
     
    You will begin your journey with a game drive to Samburu National Reserve, where you will enjoy a hot lunch and check in at Samburu Ashnil Tented Camp. After some rest, at around 4 p.m., you will embark on an afternoon game drive. 
     
    The Reserve is renowned for its rare northern species, often called Samburu's Special Five. These five animals include Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx. You will also see other fascinating animals, such as close to 900 elephants, all three big cats, and much more.
     
    After the game drive, you will return to the camp to freshen up and have a freshly prepared hot dinner. Finally, you will spend the night at the center.

    DAY 5: OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY - SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE.
     
    We will start our journey by driving towards the Rift Valley. We will quickly stop at Nyahururu Thomson Falls, named after Joseph Thompson, one of the first European explorers who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the 1880s. Afterward, we will proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park and arrive at Lake Nakuru Lodge in time for Lunch. 
     
    In the afternoon, we will go on a game drive. The lake is famous for its flamingos, but around 400 other species of birds visit it.
     
    The park is also home to many game species, including Rothschild's giraffe, black and white rhino, waterbuck, reedbuck, lion, buffalo, leopard, baboon, and several plains game species. We will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

    DAY 6: LAKE NAKURU - MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE.
     
    After Breakfast, you exit the camp with a morning game drive. Later, you will head to Masai Mara, one of Africa's most significant wildlife reserves.
     
    You will arrive at Masai Mara National Reserve in time for Lunch. Check-in at Mara Serena Lodge and freshen up. Have some time to rest after having a hot lunch.
     
    At around 4 p.m., proceed for an afternoon game drive.

    Masai Mara is a high highlight of every Safari in Kenya.
     
    It's globally famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards, cheetahs and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the great wildebeest migration or the 7th Wonder of the world.

    After the game drive, we will return to the lodge to freshen up and enjoy dinner. Have your overnight at the club.

    DAY 7: SECOND NIGHT AT MASAI MARA RESERVE.
     
    After packing your Lunch, you will leave the camp for a full-day game drive in search of the "Big 5" and other wildlife. Suppose your safari takes place between July and October. In that case, you can witness the annual wildebeest migration, considered the 7th Wonder of the World, especially when the wildebeest crosses the crocodile-infested River Mara. Later, you will return to the camp for dinner and spend the night.

    Visa:
    Most visas are best obtained before traveling to your destination. In this case, therefore, you should make prior arrangements with the appropriate foreign consular representative, to allow enough time between processing and travel date.
     
    Entry Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders.

    Double Entry and Multiple Entry Visas.
    Some itineraries might involve entering a country, leaving, and then later re-entering the same country. In such a case, you will require a double-entry or multiple-entry visa.
    When contacting a foreign consular representative, make sure to describe your itinerary clearly.
     
    Types of Visa
    There are two types of visas, single entry, and East Africa Tourist Visa. Please find your tour below to ensure you purchase the correct one.
     
    Single Entry eVisa:
    The eVisa costs $51 and must be obtained in advance. You will await approval via email (approx. 2 days), then download and print the eVisa to be presented upon entry to Kenya. The eVisa is valid for 3 months before travel.
     
    East Africa Tourist Visa:
    The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $101 and must be obtained in advance. This will allow travelers to enter Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda multiple times.
    You will await approval via email (approx. 2 days), then download and print the eVisa to be presented upon entry to Kenya. The eVisa is valid for 3 months before travel.
     
    Please note:  The East Africa Tourist Visa can be used as a multi-entry visa for Kenya.

    FLIGHT BOOKING

    Flight Preparation to Kenya from the USA.
    Flights from New York City to Nairobi: JFK to NBO. The fastest direct flight from New York City to Nairobi takes 14 hours and 20 minutes.
    The flight distance between New York City and Nairobi is 7,351 miles.
     
    However, several airlines offer itineraries to Kenya, and their bookings are all available online for your convenience. Your discretion in choosing which to use is allowed.
     
    Always ensure that you reconfirm the Flight.
     
    Luggage & Packing
    Checked bags are typically limited to a total dimension of 62 inches by adding length + width + height (example: 26"+26"+10" = 62”), and a maximum weight of 50 lbs (23kg).
     
    Carry on Luggage.
    We urge you to pack the items you would be without if your checked bags were lost in your carry-on bag. Prescription medications, eyeglasses, a change of clothes, a mobile phone and charger, valuables (including jewelry and cash), a passport, keys, insurance cards, and local contact information are a few things to keep in mind.
     
    Additionally, we advise you to pack a change of clothing in your carry-on suitcase in case your luggage is delayed or misplaced.

    DESTINATION INFORMATION

    Arrive On Time.  

    You should plan to check in at least three hours before the scheduled departure time for international flights and two hours prior to the scheduled departure time for domestic flights due to additional security checks.

    Connecting Passengers. 
    Connecting passengers from other US locations should check their bags all the way to their final destination. Some airlines, do not permit the "interlining" of checked bags, and each destination flight's luggage is checked separately.
     
    Destination Landing and Eventual Departure.
    Please finish all immigration procedures upon arrival and retrieve your bags. Check your voucher for detailed instructions if your program involves airport arrival shuttles as they differ depending on the destination.
     
    Transfer.
    We kindly suggest that you give our representative 30 minutes extra time from the time of your booked transfer due to local traffic and other unavoidable situations.
    Transfers to and from the airport are included. You shouldn't worry about being late for your tour because such potential delays are taken into account when booking transfers.

    During Game Safaris.

    Ensure to pack your items in a soft-sided duffel bag and pack lightly due to the constrained space in safari vehicles. It is not recommended to use conventional luggage with rigid frames or hard plastic panels.

    Please be aware that there is an environmental prohibition on single-use plastic bags.

    Expect to spend most of the time driving over roads that are often rough and bumpy in safari vehicles that are not air-conditioned.
    Safari vehicles have high ground clearance and require agility to embark and disembark.
     
    Tour journey in Destination Country.
    The number of participants on your trip may change as we accommodate visitors coming at various points along the schedule.
    There are many early mornings. Only "bush toilets" are available during game drives.
     
    Overland Sightseeing.
    There is a required seat rotation policy on our Customized Tour Vehicles, which will be coordinated by your Tour Manager, to ensure that travelers on tour-guided safaris have a positive and equitable experience.
     
    Independent Activities.
    The schedule might offer suggestions for things to do in your free time, but this is not a recommendation or an endorsement of any particular vendor. 
    Participation in any such activities should only be decided upon voluntarily and after careful contemplation.
     
    Souvenir Shopping.
    Most tourists like to bring back at least one memento from their travels.  We have included a few shopping pit stops at suggested locations in our Escorted itinerary. These stops are intended to improve your experience by giving you the chance to inspect high-quality, locally-made goods that you might not be able to locate on your own.

    ABOUT ACCOMMODATION & MONEY

    About Your Accommodations.
    Each hotel is chosen with care, taking into account its overall quality, location, cost, food, service, and cleanliness. Standard twin-bedded (two single beds) rooms with private bathrooms are available in every room. Many of the accommodations are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. Some of our tours require walking or stairs between tents. During this tour, you may come into proximity to wild animals whose actions can be unpredictable.
     
    Unless otherwise specified, choosing a room is always completely up to the hotel's management on a run-of-house basis. 
     
    Electricity in Safari Camps.
    Some camps and lodges rely on generators to supply electricity, which may not always be available. Travelers who are using power-dependent devices must inform the travel manager in advance so that arrangements can be made to keep them plugged on through the night.

    Please note: The U.S. uses 120 volts and you can purchase a converter and transformer at most hardware stores for your 120V appliances.

    Hotel Check-in/ Check-out.
    Check-in times at hotels are typically after 4:00 p.m. and check-out times are before midday. Hotels will typically let you store your stuff in their luggage room if you're planning on arriving early or leaving late. If the hotel can check you in earlier or let you stay later, inquire at the front desk. 
      
    Currency.
    Before you leave your country, we advise that you get a small quantity of currency for the first country you'll be visiting. A smart strategy is to avoid carrying too much cash.
    The majority of ATM cards are accepted by ATMs in many different countries but only dispense in the local currency.
     
    Credit Cards
    Even while credit cards are generally accepted, it is still a good idea to have local cash on hand. To prevent your card from being stopped for security concerns, let your credit card issuer know you will be traveling.
